Collections Policy

Sunny View School recognises that it has a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of students, and that this duty extends to having arrangements in place for dealing with children who are not collected at the end of a school day.

Sunny View School agrees to care for a student who has not been collected from school, until such a time as he/she has been collected by a parent/carer, or until appropriate, alternative care arrangements have been made with social care, and/or the police, in order to maintain the child’s safety.

The school will keep a record of incidents where parents/carers do not collect a student from school or are late for no explained or good reason, or where there are repeated incidents. If any concerns about the child’s safety and welfare result, these will be dealt with in accordance with the Sunny View School’s Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy.

Aims

  • To minimise the possibility of late collection.

  • To establish clear procedures in the event that a student is not collected at the end of the school day

Procedures

The school day finishes for Preschool students at 15:30h and for Primary and Secondary students at 16:00h. All students must be collected within 15 minutes of this time.

Late collected students are defined as being in school after 15:45h in Preschool and 16:15h in Primary and Secondary.

  • All late collected students will be recorded in the ‘late book’ in the school office.

  • The school office will contact the parents.

  • Students are to wait in the school office for their parents to arrive.

Where a student has three recorded late collections in month, a letter will be sent home. If a family is persistently late in collecting a child then the head teacher will consider taking further action, which may involve local children’s welfare services.

Non-collected students

  • If there has been no contact made after one hour, the police will be telephoned and given the child’s details i.e. name, DOB, address, names of parents/carer’s and any other contact details.

  • Children’s social care may also be informed.

  • If there are two or more such episodes within a six-week period, staff will make a referral to local social services.

  • A full report of the incident will be written and placed in the child’s school file.

  • Under no circumstances will staff look for the parent, nor take the child home.
