Key Stage 1

Step into Key Stage 1 (KS1), comprising Year 1 and Year 2, where children transition from the exploratory Early Years Foundation Stage to more structured learning encountered in later primary years.

Following the National Curriculum for England, our KS1 curriculum is designed to provide a solid foundation in core subjects while nurturing creativity and critical thinking. We blend play-based learning with an early love of reading to engage and inspire young minds.

Key Stage 1 (KS1) is a pivotal stage in a child's education, typically spanning ages 5 to 7 and encompassing Years 1 and 2. During this phase, children delve into foundational literacy and numeracy skills, with a strong emphasis on reading, phonics, and mathematics. Phonics sessions play a central role in KS1, helping children decode words by recognizing letter sounds and blending them together. Meanwhile, instruction in Mathematics covers essential concepts such as number recognition, addition, subtraction, geometry, and measurement, laying a solid numerical foundation for future learning.

Alongside literacy and numeracy, KS1 incorporates cross-curricular topic work, fostering interdisciplinary connections and enhancing children's understanding of the world around them. Through topic units encompassing subjects like science, history, geography, and art, children engage in hands-on exploration and enquiry-based learning. These cross-curricular experiences not only deepen subject knowledge but also develop crucial skills such as research, critical thinking, and collaboration, thus preparing children for a lifetime of learning.

Moreover, KS1 provides a nurturing environment where children develop not only academically but also socially and emotionally. Collaborative activities, group projects, and interactive learning opportunities promote teamwork, communication, and empathy. Teachers prioritize creating inclusive classrooms where every child feels valued and supported, fostering a positive learning atmosphere conducive to growth and development.

Throughout KS1, our team of qualified Spanish teachers deliver classes in Lengua Castellana y Literatura (Spanish Language and Literature) and Conocimeinto del medio, covering Geography and History or where appropriate, teach Spanish as an additional language, to provide an enriching linguistic and cultural experience.

In summary, Key Stage 1 provides a crucial foundation for children's onward educational journey, equipping them with essential skills and knowledge while nurturing their curiosity and love for learning. Through a balanced curriculum encompassing literacy, numeracy, and cross-curricular exploration, KS1 sets the stage for children to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally as they progress through their primary school years.
