Key Stage 4

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11) for students from 14 to 16 years old, marks the final stage in compulsory education. Our students are prepared for IGCSE and GCSE examinations in subjects that are compulsory and optional. In addition, we offer students the opportunity to achieve the ESO certificate (Educación Secundaria Obligatoria) through our provision of   Lengua Castellana y Literatura (Spanish Language and Literature) and Geografía e Historia (Geography and History) from the Spanish curriculum.

What are GCSEs/IGCSEs?

GCSEs/IGCSEs, or (International) General Certificates of Secondary Education, are two-year programmes of study in Years 10 and 11 which are taught in English schools in the UK and around the world.

At Sunny View School, students take externally assessed GCSE/IGCSE examinations at the end of Year 11 in May/June and are awarded a certificate for each of the subjects that they pass. There are nine grades available for GCSE/IGCSE subjects, ranging from 9 to U, 9 being the highest and 4 being the minimum for a pass. Results are published in August every year.

How do I choose my GCSE subjects?

Students are encouraged to choose subjects in adherence to the following advice:

  • Consider subjects that you enjoy and perform well in

  • Consider subjects that you may need for future education/your career path

  • Think about balance and variety: this helps to sustain motivation and enthusiasm for your studies

  • Proactively talk to parent(s)/carer(s), subject teachers, careers staff and students who are studying a particular subject

  • Read the subject details in this IGCSE Subject Course Guide carefully and ask if you need to know more

  • Avoid choosing a subject because you like a particular teacher

  • Avoid choosing a subject because your friends are choosing it

  • Avoid choosing a subject because it sounds interesting – make an informed choice!
