ICT

The study of ICT equips students to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world.

The aims and objectives of this qualification are to enable students to:

  • explore how digital technology impacts on the lives of individuals, organisations and society

  • learn about current and emerging digital technologies and the issues raised by their use in a range of contexts by individuals and organisations

  • develop awareness of the risks that are inherent in using ICT and the features of safe, secure and responsible practice

  • broaden and enhance their ICT skills and capability

  • work with a range of digital tools and techniques to produce effective ICT solutions in a range of contexts

  • learn how to reflect critically on their own and others’ use of ICT and how to adopt safe, secure and responsible practice.

ICT at IGCSE

This qualification provides students with the opportunity of operating confidently in today’s digital world. It is a useful, practical qualification which will provide skills needed in further education and work.

Why study ICT?

Studying ICT gives you the knowledge and understanding to use a variety of software packages which are commonly used in all lines of business, education, retail and industry. In addition, you will gain an understanding of how the recent advances in technology and the world of work and leisure affect us all.

By studying packages and their practical applications, you can ensure that you have a solid grounding to use any software package to a high level. Studying ICT also supports creativity and logical thinking within its modules, to help support your other option choices and includes project planning skills. The demand for ICT and computing skills is growing; there are many career options, which can be taken, which include, web designer, systems analyst, computer games developer and many more.

For those studying ICT at degree level, graduates could look for employment in the media (broadcast engineer, multimedia broadcaster, sound technician), military (armed forces technical officer, intelligence officer, satellite technician) or finance (credit analyst, commodity broker, financial risk analyst).
